How do students mark forum responses as "Read"?

Instructors can evaluate student participation in Trunk Forums using either the Site Statistics tool (Site Statistics / Reports / Add / Activity-Events-Forums / Generate Report) or via the Forums tool (Forums / Statistics and Grading)

Both Statistics faithfully record the authoring of conversations (threads) or replies to conversations (Replies).

Both Statistics also record "read", but this statistic is extremely unreliable as it depends completely on the instructor settings for each topic and how an individual student decides to view the conversations. Trunk Support does not recommend relying on the "read" statistics as being accurate for grading purposes.

The following is an explanation of how the "read" statistics currently work in Trunk based on the following Forum elements:

The Trunk Forums tool consists of 4 elements:

  • Forums: (General name for a group of discussion topics)
  • Topics: (The idea, concept or question being discussed)
  • Conversations: (A student response to a Topic)
  • Replies: (A student response to another student's Conversation)

Simply clicking on the title of a Forum or a Topic does not award any "read" notation in the statistics for a student.

Simply clicking on the title of a Forum or a Topic does not award any "read" notation in the statistics for a student.

A student can display the contents of a Conversation by EITHER clicking on the title of the conversation OR clicking on the "Display Message Content" button, which is displayed when a student clicks on a topic. Clicking on either will display the Conversation AND any replies to that conversation.

Example:

Example:

By default, if a student clicks on a Conversation title OR clicks on the "Display Message Content" button, the student has the ability to mark the Conversation (including all of the Repiles to that conversation) as "read" by clicking on the button labeled "Mark All as Read"

By default, if a student clicks on a Conversation title OR clicks on the "Display Message Content" button, the student has the ability to mark the Conversation (including all of the Repiles to that conversation) as "read" by clicking on the button labeled "Mark All as Read"

If the student clicks on this "Mark All as Read" button THEN, that Conversation (and any replies to that Conversation) are marked as "read" and the student is marked as a "read" in the statistics (for the conversation AND for each of the Replies).

It is also possible for a student to click on the expanding arrow to the left of a conversation and access individual replies to that conversation (without displaying the entire conversation).

It is also possible for a student to click on the expanding arrow to the left of a conversation and access individual replies to that conversation (without displaying the entire conversation).

By default, if a student clicks on an individual "Reply", that "reply is marked as "read" and the student is awarded a "read" in the statistics.

If the Instructor has checkmarked the "Automatically mark all messages in a conversation as read" in the Topic Settings AND the student clicks on a Conversation:

If the Instructor has checkmarked the "Automatically mark all messages in a conversation as read" in the Topic Settings AND the student clicks on a Conversation:

That Conversation (and any replies to that Conversation) are automatically marked as "read" and the student is marked as a "read" in the statistics (for the conversation AND for each of the Replies).

If the Instructor has checkmarked the "Automatically mark all messages in a conversation as read" in the Topic Settings, AND if a student clicks on the  "Display Message Content" button the conversation (and replies) ARE NOT automatically marked as "read".

If the Instructor has checkmarked the "Automatically mark all messages in a conversation as read" in the Topic Settings, AND if a student clicks on the  "Display Message Content" button the conversation (and replies) ARE NOT automatically marked as "read".

In this circumstance, the student has the ability to mark the Conversation (including all of the Replies to that conversation) as "read" by clicking on the button labeled "Mark All as Read". IF the student clicks on this "Mark All as Read" button THEN, that Conversation (and any replies to that Conversation) are marked as "read" and the student is marked as a "read" in the statistics (for the conversation AND for each of the Replies).
