What site user roles exist in the Trunk Learning Management System?

There is a different set of "roles" (and thus default permissions) on a Trunk Course site than on a Trunk Project site.

Trunk Course Site Roles:

  • Instructor - No one can add an Instructor account to a Trunk course site. Instructor accounts can only be added to a Trunk course site via the daily feed of SIS information.  An Instructor has complete access to all of the functions on a Trunk course site.  Instructors can build and manage a course, grade, assign roles, and change permissions for roles within a course.
  • Teaching Assistant (TA) - Can upload files, create and manage assignments, forums, syllabi, web content, etc. Can be given permission to grade. To give Teaching Assistants access to grading, the instructor must go to Gradebook2 / Edit / Assign Grader Permissions.
  • Guest Instructor - Use this role to manually add instructors (those who are not associated with the course in SIS). This role has the full set of instructor permissions and is allowed not only to build and manage a course, but also to grade, assign roles, and change permissions for those roles within a course.
  • Course Builder - Can upload files, create and manage assignments, forums, syllabi, etc. Cannot grade. This role is recommended for department admins/coordinators.
  • Librarian - Can upload files, create and manage assignments, forums, syllabi, web content, etc. Cannot grade.
  • Student - No one can add a Student account to a Trunk course site. Student accounts can only be added to a Trunk course site via the daily feed of SIS information. Students have read access to all visable content and can participate in (but not manage) all Trunk tools. They can read (and download) all available resources, respond to Forum Topics, submit assignments and take tests and quizzes. STUDENTS CANNOT ACCESS A TRUNK COURSE SITE UNLESS IT IS PUBLISHED (See: How do I publish a course site?)
  • Student NonRegistered - Use this role for Students who are not (or not yet) enrolled in the course via SIS. Can participate fully as a student. STUDENT NON-REGISTERED CANNOT ACCESS A TRUNK COURSE SITE UNLESS IT IS PUBLISHED (See: How do I publish a course site?)
  • Guest - Read only access, with the exception of ability to create and post to forums and messages. This role is recommended for observers.

Project Site Roles:

  • Participant - Can participate fully (including uploading files) in the Resources tool, read and write access to all other tools.
  • Guest - Primarily read-only access. This role is recommended for observers of the project.
  • Organizer - This role has the full set of permissions and is allowed to build and manage a project site, assign roles, and change permissions.
