How do I create an assessment using the Tests & Quizzes Markup Text?

An alternative to manually creating an assessment using the Test & Quizzes Assessment Builder, is to create an assessment using Markup Text.

First, create your assessment in a text editor like MS Word, Notepad or TextEdit.

You can create 5 different types of questions using markup Text:

  • Multiple Choice - Single Answer
  • Multiple Choice - Multiple Answer
  • Fill in the Blank
  • Essay
  • True/False

The following provides directions on using Markup Text to create assessment questions.

Markup Text: Multiple Choice - Single Answer Example:

  1. On the first line, a number, followed by a period, followed by parenthetical indication of points to assign
  2. On the following line enter the multiple choice question
  3. Each answer should begin with its appropriate letter, in alphabetical order. The correct answer should be prefixed with an asterisk (*).

  3. The correct answer should be prefixed with an asterisk (*).

  3. The correct answer should be prefixed with an asterisk (*). The incorrect answer can also be included, as above, though this is not necessary.

After you have the Markup Text saved in your text editor, go to Tests & Quizzes.

Select "Create using Markup Text", enter an assessment Title, then click Create

This displays the Create Assessment page.

Edit the assessment name and enter a description (Optional)

Copy your Markup questions and Paste them into the Question box, then click Next.

This displays a  Validate Assessment page.

Check your questions, then click Create Assessment.

This creates the assessment and places it in the Working Copies Tab.

After you have created the Markup Text assessment, under Working Copies, click Select Action / Settings to configure how the assessment will be delivered to the students. For a detailed explanation of the assessment Settings see "How do I configure the Settings for an assessment?"
